Mensuration
Measuring of Areas, Lengths, Volumes.
Declination
Angular difference between true north and magnetic north.
How to convert dbh to basal area.
dbh2 x .005454
Name 3 intstruments for measuring tree diameter.
biltmore stick, diameter tape, calipers
Name 3 instruments for measuring tree height.
Merrit Hypsometer, abbey level, clinometer.
What are key measurements taken in Forest Surveying?
Distance and Direction
Define 3 forest stand parameters.
stand density, volume, species compisition, slope
ID 3 of the timed range signals used for GPS
P-code - military
Carrier phase - High accuracy level surveying
Coarse acquisition - ordinary location and mapping
ID 3 factors that will affect tree grade
Species, Height, # of Defects
ID 4 wood product classes
Veneer – No defects,
Construction – Minimal defects, used for RR ties and building
Local use – Lots of Defects, can be used for Firewood, pallets
What is PDOP
Position dilution of precision -
Defines a small ellipse that includes the actual point. Called Expected probable Error or EPE on our GPS systems
Types of Forest Inventory
Land acquisition - Assess condition of timber on new property for moderate level valuation
Timber Sale - Primary OBJ is to calculate the net volume or value of merchantable trees
Management plan or continuous forest –
Specific Condition Inventory –
How to find variance and standard deviation
- Find the mean
- find the difference of the #s from the mean
- square differences and add them up
- divide the result of the addition by the # of variables
- That # is your variance, square root that, and then it is your standard deviation.
How to find the SEM
STDEV/ square root of the population size or # of variables
Simple Statistics Definitions
Mode - most freq occurred value
Median - middle value of series when arranged in order of magnitude
Mean - Avg of set of observations
Range - Diff b/w largest and smallest value
How to construct a Confidence Interval
Avg +/- t(SEM)
