matter
the material of the universe
homogeneous
a mixture that is the same throughout
heterogeneous
a mixture that has different property’s throughout
law of conservation of mass
mass cannot be created or destroyed
quantitative measurement
numbers
qualitative measurement
not numbers
density
a property of matter representing the mass per unit volume
atom
the fundamental unit of which elements are composed
atomic mass unit
a small unit of mass equal to 1.66•10^24 grams
isotopes
atoms of the same element that have different numbers of neutrons. they have identical atomic numbers but different mass numbers
alkali metals
elements in the first group of the periodic table +1 ions
transition metals
several series of elements in which inner orbitals are being filled. elements at the bottom of the periodic table
alkali earth metals
group 2 of the periodic table 2+ ions
halogens
group 7 of the periodic table 1- ions

ion
an atom or group of atoms that has a net positive or negative charge
Daltons atomic theory
- elements are made of tiny particles called atoms
- all atoms of a given element are identical
- the atoms of a given element are different than those of any other element
- atoms of one element can combine with atoms of other elements to form compounds. a given compound always has the same relative numbers and types of atoms
- atoms are indivisible in chemical processes. that is, atoms are not created or destroyed in chemical reactions. a chemical reaction simply changes the way the atoms are grouped together
