Q

Describe a point or two about Conflict Avoidance

A

• The apparent lack of conflict does not mean that none exists.
• Don’t avoid conflict that may be self-destructive if not addressed.
• Discernment about what conflicts exist and which of them should be
actively addressed requires regular habits of deep listening to God and
others.
Unhealthy avoidance of conflict can be passive or acJve
• Awareness of serious but un-addressed conflict demands a choice which
will either:
• preserve the current level of conflict
• raise the conflict to the level 1
• Habitually and systemically choosing to preserve a 0 level of conflict does
not encourage trust and undermines confidence in the community

Q

Describe a point or two about A Problem to Solve

A

Confronting a problem will lead to multiple options for response
• When multiple people address a problem discernment becomes more
complex
• Frustration is likely at this level for those who are uncomfortable with
conflict
• The group’s level of trust and ability to communicate effectively with one
another will become more apparent at this level.
• Even with healthy leadership, good communication, and a significant level
of trust level 1 conflict may progress to level 2 before resolution

Q

Describe a point or two about a Disagreement

A

Lack of unity concerning an appropriate response to a problem can lead to
a significant disagreement within the group
• Groups can engage in disagreement and still come to a healthy decision
about their response to a problem.
• Consensus is less important than:
– open acknowledgement of the disagreement
– full discussion
– effective listening
– and common commitment to a course of action
• Spiritual disciplines for discernment are extremely important to the
successful resolution of conflict.
• When those disciplines are not adequate level 2 conflict may progress to
level 3

Q

Describe a point or two about Contest.

A

• When the emotional energy of the disagreement overwhelms a group’s
ability to do productive discernment the conflict escalates to a contest of
will.
• The impasse among leaders means that discussion about the potential
responses to the presenting problem spills over into the larger
community.
• Factions can begin to form within the community around the different
proposed responses to the problem
• Even at this level there is potential for a positive impact on the community
through a broader community discussion about it’s values and purpose.
• The Holy Spirit can work through Level 3 to motivate and bring new
conviction, and clarity to the group.
• The ability to maintain productive engagement at level 3 requires:
– general good will towards one another
– and confidence in the work of the Holy Spirit

Q

Describe a point or two about Fight or Flight.

A

Loss of good will and confidence in the work of the Holy Spirit can cause
Level 3 conflict to escalate into a Level 4 conflict
• Listening stops and individual conviction about personal discernment
takes hold
• Discussion is no longer open or respectful
• Trust is compromised, divisions become clear, and communication
becomes difficult
• Level 4 conflict o]en requires external support
• Pride and distrust prevent groups from seeking critical support
• With support the conflict may be returned to a Level 3
• Experiencing Level 4 and being helped back to Level 3 can result in
Spiritual growth

17
Q

Describe a point or two in Intractable Situation

A

• Without productive resolution Level 4 conflict will become an
intractable situation
• Relationship become destructive
• Little energy is available for anything outside of fighting or avoiding
confrontation
• External support at this level may only be able to mediate an
adjudicated separation.
• Communities emerging from separation due to Level 5 conflict are
fundamentally shaped by the experience
• Experience of Level 5 conflict is one the greatest tests of faith

18
Q

What is considered critical about recognizing conflict?

A

Ability to describe the source of conflict in terms of energy or anxiety present in relationships rather than in terms of people.
