-Primary Infection at mucosal site of inoculation w/ retrograde infection. Following resolution of primary infection, HSV remains in a latent state w/ intermittent reactivation at mucosal sites

  • Antiviral therapy for initial genital herpes
  • Daily suppressive therapy reduces frequency of recurrences
