What is dementia?
The permanent and progressive loss of mental functions (such as thinking, reasoning, and remembering), caused by damage to the brain tissue.
What is delirium?
A temporary state of confusion. A symptom of an underlying disorder, such as an infection.
Four most common causes of dementia
Alzeimers disease, vascular demetia, lewy body dementia and frontotemporal dementia.
The four A’s of dementia
amnesia, aphasia, agnosia and apraxia
what is amnesia?
amnesia is memory loss
what is aphasia?
aphasia is difficulty in communicating.
what is agnosia?
agnosia is difficulty in recognizing sensory input
what is apraxia?
apraxia is difficulty coordinating steps needed to complete a task
What are basic human needs?
self actualization, self-esteem, love and belonging, safety and security, and physiologic needs
What are the ABC’s of good body mechanics?
Alignment- good body posture.
Balance-stability produced by the even distribution of weight.
Coordinated body movement-using the weight of your body to help with movement
Lifting procautions
Plan your lift, stand close to the object and widen base of support, bend your knees and keep your back straight, tighten abdominal muslces and lift with your leg muscles.
