Q

what is a coarse filter approach for managing wildlife species?

A

Protects species by protecting habitat.
Number of species are looked after by this approach.

Q

What is a fine filter approach for managing wildlife species?

A

Accounts for species that fall through the cracks.
Maintains specific life requisites(denning, breeding, feeding etc)

Q

What are identified wildlife management strategies? (IWMS)

A

species or plant communities that are considered to be sensitive to habitat alteration associated with forest and range practises and are considered to be at risk (ie: endangered, threatened, vulnerable, or regionally important)

6
Q

How does a species become a IWMS species?

A

The species or plant community must be affected by forest and range practises
The limited habitat (eg: breeding, denning, etc) must not already be protected by other methods (riparian habitat)
provincially designated red and blue listed species
designed to protect species not adequately protected at coarse filter stage

Q

What 2 types of WHAs can be established?Who can propose them?

A
  1. can be located around a known occurence
  2. located around an area with high habitat quality
WHAs can be proposed by general public, private individuals(professionals), and institutions, species biologist
