The administration of Acupuncture treatment should include:
- Li – syndrome differentiation
- Fa – treatment principles
- Fang – Acupuncture prescriptions
- Xue – point selection
- Shu – techniques
Treatment Principles of Acupuncture and Moxibustion as listed in the Neijing (LingShu ch. 1 & 10)
a. reduce excess
b. strengthen deficiency
c. Apply quick pricking therapy to heat syndromes
d. Apply retention of the needle and warm methods to cold syndromes
e. When there is stagnated blood, apply the bleed- pricking therapy
f. Apply moxibustion when the syndrome is sinking due to deficiency of vital Qi

Sinking due to deficiency of vital Qi
What two ways can you tonify deficiency and reduce excess of a merdian(s) and organ(s) besides working directly with that channel?
Interior-Exterior (Yin/Yang) Relationship – e.g. LU/LI if someone has external wind-cold affecting the LU, you can needle LI4, LI20.
Mother-Son Relationship – If deficiency, tonify the mother. If excessive, reduce the son.
What is a condition you would treat both excess and deficiency?
Clearing heat and warming cold. Or LR overacting on SP - reduce LR and tonify SP.
Cold syndrome is divided into what two scenarios?
Deficiency cold and excess cold that are treated with different methods. Warm yang and tonify deficiency, or Remove cold from meridians and warm yang to dispel cold.
When do you treat the Ben or the Biao?
For general and chronic cases treat Ben (root) and for acute cases treat Biao (branch). May also be treated together.
What is 同病异治,异病同治 Tong bìng yì zhì, yì bìng tong zhì?
Treat same disease w/ different methods,
treating different diseases w/ same method.
Prescription of Acu-points consists of main and match points what does this mean?
Main points treat dz directly and match points are used to strengthen the main point and relieve secondary symptoms or temper action of main points.
Can a point be indicated for both excess and deficiency?
Yes, like PC6 is good for both stagnation and deficiency leading to chest pain
When choosing local points how do you select?
Tenderness and Ashi points associated with meridian points
What are the options for choosing distal points?
- Along the diseased meridian
- Same name meridian pairs (conformations)
- Yin Yang paired meridians (phase pair)
Other ways of choosing points:
Syndrome differentiation
Experienced Points
Principle points - like emperor herb in a formula
Adjuvant points: like minister herbs
What therapeutic methods are based on the exterior – interior relations of the zang–fu organs, and applicable to cases in which both a zang and fu–organ that are exterior – interiorly related to each other get diseased?,
Purging the exterior and calming the interior,
Opening the interior and activating the exterior,
Clearing the interior and moistening the exterior.
What are the “Three Conditions” that you must consider when treating a patient?,
seasonal conditions,
local conditions,
constitution of the patient
