The two fold purpose is to cause us to believe that Jesus is the Christ, and to show s he to obtain life through His name. He provides scriptural evidence of this in John 20:31,"But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in His name." This verse explains that it had already been written in the Bible previous to John that predict Jesus as the Messiah.
