Fire Inspection and Code 8th Ch7 Flashcards
Safe continuous path of travel from any point in a structure to a public way; the means of egress is composed of three parts: the exit access, the exit, and the exit discharge.
Means of Egress
Area of Refuge
Public way
Clear Width
Portion of a means of egress that leads to the exit; for example, hallways, corridors, and aisles.
Exit Access
Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990, Public law 101-336
The route of travel used to determine measured egress distances in code enforcement. The common path of travel is considered to be down the center of a strait corridor and a 1-foot radius around each corner. Also called the normal path of travel.
Common Path of Travel
Portion of a means of egress that is separated from all other spaces of the building structure by construction or equipment, and provides a protected way of travel to the exit discharge
Exit
A path of egress travel from one building to an area of another building on approximately the same level, or a path of egress travel through or around a wall or partition to an area on approximately the same level on the same building
Horizontal Exit
Stairways that are designed to limit the penetration of smoke, heat, and toxic gases from a fire on a floor of a building into the stairway and that serve as part of a means of egress
Smokeproof enclosures
That portion of the exit that is between the exit and a public way
Exit Discharge
Hardware mounted on exit doors in public buildings that unlocks from the inside and enables doors to be opened when pressure is applied to the release mechanism. Also called Exit Device
Panic Hardware
Distance from any given area in a structure to the nearest exit or to a fire extinguisher.
