First Round Flashcards

Q

Tell me about yourself

A

I’m a self-taught frontend engineer. After being in school for Pre-Physical Therapy and taking one intro to computer science class my last semester of college , I decided I wanted to change career path and get into a field that has interest to me and has more opportunities. I started working with a mentor that has guided me. Soon, I started working on a project with Developer Pro where I helped build an internal tool called a cockpit, where it was made to analyze sales of different medicine that belonged to different subsidiaries in different countries. I have experience with react, redux, styled components. I’m looking for a new project to build or a new language to learn. I’m ready to take the next step in my career, and I think your company has many things I’m looking for.

Q

Strengths

A

-Positive Attitude=>My positive attitude is one of my strengths. I have been a restaurant server, and a health aide in the past, jobs that require plenty of energy and endurance. I can view a situation from multiple perspectives and empathize with my customers and patients to understand their needs at any given time.
In terms of a software engineering it is important to understand the needs of the user and their perspective and how to make it a a better experience for them and understand how the software addresses those needs
-Time Management =>I use multiple apps to make sure I am managing my time correctly to make sure I get my tasks done needed for the day. Make sure to tackle the most difficult task first. Some of them include, a pomodoro timer, time tracking to measure productivity like toggl, clear goal setting from daily to weekly, regular review to track progress
Critical thinking => software engineering is nothing if not a bundle of problems waiting to be solved. It its import to analyze the situation and gather information on the issue. Then, determining which piece of code is applied to the issue and which do not. Then, we tackle the issue from there
Presentation Skills => Before I ask a question, I make sure I’ve explored multiple possible solutions. Then before I ask the question to whomever, I make sure to explain what I tried and my train of thought with each test before asking for their input.

Q

Weakness

A

-Harsh self-criticism => My inner critic can be weakening at times. I take pride in producing good work, but I feel like I struggle feeling satisfied with it. However, I’ve started to push back against this inner voice by taking care of myself before and after work. I’m also learning to recognize when my inner critic is right and when I need to dismiss it.
-Procrastination => Procrastination has bad habit of mine. I think it stems from a fear of failure, to be honest. I started using Google calendar and apps like Trello to manage my time better. Crossing things off my to-do list makes me feel accomplished, and I’ve learned to tackle harder tasks early in the day when I’m feeling refreshed and less likely to put them off.
-Lack of Organization=> Sometimes I struggle with organization. While it has never really impacted my performance, I have realized it has gotten in the way of my efficiency. For example, I leave too many tabs open at a time and that gets in the way whenever I am working on a specific task involving just a couple of tabs. I have learned to check all the tabs at the end of the day in order to see which ones are not necessary.

Q

How do you handle stress and pressure

A

Whenever I feel stressed out, I take a moment to evaluate what exactly is causing my stress. Whenever I’m under pressure, I make a quick evaluation on the situation and figure out the things I can control and those I can’t. Then I proceed to do the best I can to handle the things I can.

Q

What is your ideal job?

A

My idea job is a a place where the culture is positive, accepting, comforting and supporting. Size of company,I’ve been told by mentors that working at a startup is better than working at a huge corporation, especially if you are early in the early point of your career. At large companies, there isn’t a great deal of familiarity with the codebase as there are a lot of moving parts. Product:

Q

How do you handle conflict?

A

First, it is important to accept conflict and that it is natural, not everyone is going to agree. Also to stay calm, adding any emotion to it is going to escalate the situation. Be open minded and understand the other person’s perspective. Play out both scenarios. Find a solution that both works. Building relationship and trusts. Talk through the situation At the end of the day, you are working together for the same end goal.

Ex.While implementing a design from the designer, I realized a particular flaw in the design when a certain situation arose. I did some research on design principles and came up with what I believed would be a nice modification to the design that would fix the issue. I brought this up to the designer and we didn’t agree on moving forward with my version of the modification. However, after some thinking over, I realized there is a separation of concerns for a reason and I should probably let the designer do what he specializes in. I was also probably insisting on my way because of the time I had put in and wanted to see my idea come to life. I told him this and we moved forward with him keeping my proposal in mind.

Q

What frustrates you?

A

When my fellow developers write code in a more complicated way than it could be written. That means they try to write a “one liner” with complex syntax all while sacrificing readability.
