Fish care Flashcards
from formatives (9 cards)
what areas would you consider when investigating fish health
- environmental
- diet
- husbandry
- water quality
- observe group and individual behavior
- identify individuals for sampling
what is suspended culturing
lantern nets/trays are suspended from the water surface. allows natural feeding and protection from predators and competetive organisms
list of species reared in suspended culturing
oysters and other shellfish
list of species reared in cages
salmonoids, bass, bream, pangasius
list of species reared in ponds
trout, shrimp, pangasius
how are tanks used in rearing fish
All species in the early stages are reared in tanks.
Salmonids and halibut fish can remain in tanks once they have grown out of this stage.
What is flow through?
water management system
Water passes through the system once, whilst providing the waste treatment as required. The water is discharged rather than re-circulating and repeat treatment.
what is batch culture?
water management system
tank is filled with water, where a “batch” of larval species are added and allowed to grow.
often used for shrimp and larval stages of marine fish
Explain the physiological changes that occur during smoltification
- Altered body shape
- Increased skin reflectance
- altered physical appearance
- altered behaviour
- blood chloride and gill ATPase levels change
