Flashcards
What do glands do,what is considered the master gland?
Glands secrete hormones. The master gland is the pituitary gland.
What is a conscious response
A conscious response is a signal that travels to the brain, then signals are sent to the effector.
What is a reflex response?
A reflex response bypasses the brain and goes straight to the effector.
What does a stimulant do,how does it work?
A stimulant increases your reaction time(eg caffine),by speeding up the rate of neurotransmitters crossing synapses.
How does your body deal with high and low blood glucose levels?
With High amounts of glucose the pancreas secrets insulin, which causes glucose to be absorbed into cells to be used for respiration. With low amounts of glucose the pancreas secretes glucagon, which causes the liver and muscles to convert glycogen back into glucose.
What does the hormone thyroxine do?
Controls the bodies metabolic rate
What does the hormone adrenaline do?
Promotes ‘fight or flight’ response.Increase heart and breathing rate.
What are the four hormones in the menstrual cycle?
LH,FSH,oestrogen,progesterone.
What is the role of FSH?
To mature the eggs and causes the ovaries to produce oestrogen.
What is the role of oestrogen?
Causes uterus lining to thicken, inhibits FSH as well.
What is the role of LH?
Causes egg to be released.
What is the role of progesterone?
Secreted by ovaries to maintain uterus lining.
Describes the structure of DNA
Double helix shaped polymer that contains genetic code.
Give one advantage of asexual reproduction.
Only requires one parent.
Give one advantage of sexual reproduction.
Causes genetic variation.
What is meant by homozygous?
Has two type of the same allele
What is meant by heterozygous?
Has a recessive allele and a dominant allele (Bb)
What do food chains/diagrams show?
The distribution of energy within an ecosystem or shows direction of energy between trophic levels.
How do humans affect biodiversity?
Land is used for farming, quarrying and building with requires deforestation
Why do pyramids of biomass always get smaller with each trophic level?
Which useful characteristic are crops genetically modified for?
Larger yields
What is a concern about genetically modified crops?
They will harm wildlife.
What is the name of a piece of DNA that codes for a characteristic?
Gene
What type of substance is made using the dna code?
Proteins
