Floods Flashcards

1
Q

What is the main natural cause of floods?

A

When there is heavy rainfall over a few days or in a flash flood, the natural watercourses cannot carry all the water away. The level of water in rivers or dams rises. When the level of this wayer rises above the riverbanks or dam walls, it starts overflowing onto the land next to the rivers and dams. The water then submerges these areas

Q

How do human activities cause floods?

A

Human activities have changed the natural environment by, for example, building cities and dams, and clearing forests to get land for agriculture. This means that the natural environment can no longer cope with heavy rains, which results in floods

Q

How does farming cause floods?

A

Overgrazing: when too many animals graze on a piece of land, the vegetation is destroyed. Rain then washes the soil into rivers, which silt up and overflow
Over-cultivation: when land has been used for farming for a long time, the soul be CV omes infertile and very little vegetation can grow on it. So, the soil is not protected. It is then easy for the rain the wash the soil into rivers, which silt up and overflow

Q

How do settlements cause floods?

A

When people build houses and roads, they cover the soil with materials that cannot absorb rainfall. This results in a lot of runoff. If there is too muvh runoff, or if the stormwater drains are inadequate or blocked, flooding will happen

Q

How do fires cause floods?

A

Some farmers burn the vegetation on their lands to clear it for planting crops. There are also often veld fires in the bush or in the mountains. These fires destroy vegetation. So, the soil is unprotected and the rain can easily wash it into rivers, which silt up and overflow

Q

How can loss of vegetation cause floods?

A

When land or forests are cleared to build homes or factories, rainfall can no longer be absorbed. So, there is runoff or the water collects on the surfaces, which can cause flooding

Q

How can changing the flow of rivers cause floods?

A

Farms and people need a constant supply of water. So, many dams have been built across rivers. This has changed the natural flow of these rivers. When there is heavy rainfall, these dams can overflow and cause flooding

11
Q

How do floods cause diseases?

A

Floods damage water supplies and sewage systems. People then do not have clean water to drink and are forced to drink the contaminated water and eat contaminated food

Q

How do floods cause displacement?

A

Floods may destroy people’s homes as well as their businesses. These people then have to look for other places to live and work

Q

What effects can floods have on the land?

A

. When heavy rain falls, especially on land that has poor vegetation cover, it can flow away along indentations/trails on the surface. As the water flows along these indentations, it creates rivulets that can turn into gullies
. Floods can destroy crops. When too much rain falls, the soil becomes waterlogged and the roots begin to rot. The crops then die
. Floods can wash the topsoil away from one area, either into rivers or dams, or deposit it in other areas. This can have devastating effects on agricultural production amd food security in an area

Q

What effects do floods have on buildings and infrastructure?

A

Floodwater moves with great force and can wash away buildings. When this happens floods can cause chaos, hunger and suffering. In addition, people can be left homeless, hospitals may be destroyed, schooling may be disrupted and transport may become bery difficult because of roads, bridges and railway lines that have been washed away

Q

What is a catchment area?

A

A natural area from which rainfall flows into rivers and lakes. Some rural communities build their homes on or near catchment areas. When it rains heavily, these areas are quickly flooded

16
Q

What is a floodplain?

A

An area of low-lying ground next to a river. Some communities build their homes on or near to floodplains. When it rains heavily, these areas are quickly flooded

17
Q

What is a water table and why do high water tables put communities at risk of floods?

A

A water table is the level of underground water. If the water table is high it means that the underground water is close to the surface of the Earth. Areas with high water tables flood quickly when heavy rain fall. So, communities who build their houses in such areas are likely to experience frequent floods

18
Q

Why do slopes of hills put communities at risk of floods?

A

Unless hill slopes have been given proper drainage systems, they become flooded very easily when it rains heavily. This is because the rainwater flows down the hill slope and then enters people’s homes. Many informal settlements are built on such hill slopes

19
Q

What is a stormwater system and why do unadequate or absent stormwater systems put communities at risk of flooding?

A

The drainage system in urban areas. It allows runoff from heavy rainfall to drain away under the streets. Some areas, like informal settlements, do not have stormwater systems. So, when it rains heavily, the water has nowhere to go and accumulates on the surface until it floods people’s homes. In other areas like townships, the stormwater system is often inadequate or blocked with rubbish due to poor service delivery. So, the runoff cannot drain away quickly enough and flooding occurs

20
Q

What other things affect the risk of floods?

A

. The types of houses and other buildings
. If the community is built in a low-lying coastal area it is at risk of being flooded

21
Q

How can authorities prepare for floods?

A

. Construct flood control reservoirs, water diverting schemes and hazard zoning floodplains
. Use laws to stop people from building settlements in high-risk flood areas
. Remove settlements from high-risk flood areas
. Develop building regulations for high-risk flood areas
. Develop early warning systems
. Have public education programs to help communities understand the dangers of floods

22
Q

What can people and communities do to prepare for floods?

A

. Be aware of where they build their houses or shelters
. Obey the rules and by-laws of their local municipality about where they are allowed to build and what types of structures they can construct
. Become involved as community disaster risk management volunteers
. Becone community activists and speak out about local developments that are increasing the risk of flooding
. Discuss evacuation plans and the dangers of floods with their families

23
Q

How can authorities respond to floods?

A

. Distribute warnings and other flood-related information to the community
. Make sure that essential services are maintained or quickly re-established
. Keep access routes open for evacuation and emergency vehicles
. Protect or repair structures that help in flood control
. Construct temporary structures to help with flood control
. Conduct search and rescue operations
. Evacuate people and provide them with things they need immediately, such as clean water, dry clothing and medicines
. Protect property and possessions
. Look after flood-affected animals

24
Q

How can people and communities respond to floods?

A

. Be ready to respond and act quickly
. Follow the instructions and advice of local authorities
. Evacuate immediately, if advised to do so
. Follow recommended evacuation routes.
. Stay away from flooded areas
. Never try to walk, swim or drive in fast-flowing water or floodwater
. Get out of your vehicle if it becomes stuck in water. Move to higher ground
. Stay away from stream banks, river banks or river bridges
. Avoid contact with floodwater, as far as possible
. Boul all drinking water and throw awat all food that has come into contact with floodwater
. Stay out of a building if floodwaters surround it
