What are the different types of flower arrangements?
Solitary, cluster, cymes, umbels and capitulum
Cyme
Pairs of flower stalks branching off the stem
Umbel
A head on which many flowers sit e.g. the carrot family
Capitulum
A cluster of small flowers surrounded by petals e.g daisies
Corymb
Stalks of different lengths ending in flowers, creating a flat top shape e.g. yarrow
Actinomorphic
Flower with multiple lines of symmetry (regular)
Zygomorphic
Flower with one line of symmetry (irregular)
Calyx
The outer whorl of a flower composed of the sepals
Corolla
The second whorl of a flower composed of the petals
Tepals
When it is difficult to identify a structure as sepals or petals they are called tepals
Androecium
Collective name for male parts of the flower - the stamens- which are composed of anthers and filaments
Gynoecium
Collective name for female parts of the flower including stigma, style, ovaries and ovules
Monoecious
Plant which has male flowers and female flowers which are separate but on the same plant (e.g. 10% of flowering plants and many conifers)
Dioecious
Plant which has only male or female flowers and individual plants are either male or female (e.g. 10% of flowering plants and many conifers)
Bisexual hermaphrodite
Plant which has flowers containing both male and female parts (around 80% of flowering plants)
Receptacle
Place of attachment of flower parts to stem
