Fluency Flashcards
(35 cards)
What is a control group?
The part of the experiment that stays the same
What is the independent variable?
The part of the experiment that changes
What is the dependent variable?
What is being measured
Why should a scientist keep good records and write out detailed steps?
So someone can repeat the experiment
Why do scientists repeat the procedure to an experiment?
To make sure data/observations are valid/reliable
Before experimenting, you should make a what?
plan
What is a renewable resource?
Resources that are readily available and are replaced before we can use them up.
Example of renewable resources
water, wind
What is a nonrenewable resource?
Resources that are limited and used up faster than we can replace.
Example of nonrenewable resources?
Coal, oil, natural gases
Two types of mechanical energy?
Potential and Kinetic
What increases kinetic energy?
mass and speed
Which has the most Potential energy, a bowling ball sitting on a top shelf or a bowling ball sitting on a lower shelf?
Top shelf. Increases with height
What does a conductor do?
Allows heat to move easily
Give example of a conductor
metal spoon will burn you
What does an insulator do?
Keeps heat in
Example of an insulator
Wood, air, fur
What does friction work against?
Kinetic energy
What are the 3 states of matter?
solid liquid gas
When heat is added to a solid, what will happen?
Solid will melt into a liquid and evaporate into a gas
When head is removed from a gas, what will happen?
Gas will condense into a liquid and freeze into a solid
Frying an egg and roasting marshmallows is an example of what kind of reaction?
Chemical reaction
What is matter?
Anything that takes up space and has mass
What tool is used to measure volume of a liquid?
Beaker
