Fluids Flashcards
(21 cards)
What is #1 in particle theory?
All matter is made up of tiny particles.
What is #2 in the particle theory?
All particles are in constant motion.
What is #3 in particle theory?
All particles in a pure substance are identical.
What is #4 of the particle theory?
Temperature affects the speed at which particles move.
What is #5 for particle theory?
There are forces of attraction between particles.
What is #6 for the particle theory?
There are spaces between particles.
What is matter?
Matter is anything that has mass and takes up space.
What is mass?
Mass is the amount of matter in a object.
What is volume?
Volume is the measure of how much space a substance takes up.
What is a fluid?
A fluid is any substance that flows.
What is the particle theory of matter?
This is the theory that describes all the characteristics of matter.
What is a slurry?
A mixture of water and solids.
What is sublimation?
Sublimation is the term used for when a solid turns into a gas without becoming liquid in the process.
What is thermal expansion?
Thermal expansion is when a substances volume increases in response to the increase in temperature.
What is melting?
Melting is when a solid forms into a liquid state (usually with the help of heat).
What is evaporation?
Evaporation happens when a liquid forms into gas particles.
What is a contraction?
When something moves more slowly and closely together.
What is deposition?
Deposition is the process in which a gas turns into a solid (surpassing the liquid state).
Define freezing
When a liquid forms to a solid state (particles slow down).
What is condensation?
Condensation is the process where gas particles form, making liquid droplets.
How is a fluid differant from a solid in terms of a shape?
It is differant because a liquid takes the shape of it container whereas a solid, has a fixed shape.
