Fluvioglacial Landforms Flashcards
(4 cards)
Kames
-Mounds of till showing evidence of meltwater flow
-Till deposited in final stages of glacial period by meltwater streams on ice surface
Eskers
-Long ridges of till running parallel to valley sides
-Form when subglacial meltwater channels lose energy during retreat and so deposit silt + sand in shape of channel
E.g. Dahlen Esker
Outwash Plain (Sandur)
At the end of a glacial period extensive meltwater carries material out in front of the glacier to form an outwash plain
These outwash plains may also contain braided rivers when the meltwater channels split due to deposition disruption etc..
Outwash plains are sorted, with the largest rocks and boulders being deposited first and closest to glacier
Kettle Holes
Large blocks of ice left behind during retreat create a depression in the ground when they eventually melt, and then fill with water later
