Q

Hydrocarbons

A

Compounds that only contain carbon and hydrogen. Examples are methane, ethane, butane and propane. Gasoline, diesel, home heating oil and crude oil are hydrocarbons that contain additives.

Q

Polar Solvent

A

Water-soluble chemicals that readily combine with the water in a foam blanket, thus destroying it. Examples are alcohol, ether, lacquer, thinner and acetone. Alcohol resistant foam needs to be used on these substances.

Q

Specific Gravity

A

A measure of density in liquids relative to water. Refers to whether a substance will float on or sink in water. A liquid with a specific gravity of less than 1.0 floats on water while a liquid with a specific gravity equal to or greater than 1.0 will sink in water.

Q

Vapor Density

A

A measure of density in vapors compared to air. Refers to whether a gas will rise or fall when mixed with air. A vapor density greater than 1.0 will sink while a material with a vapor density less than 1.0 will rise when mixed in air.

Q

Fluoroprotein Foam

A

Brown Band, effective when foam is covered by fuel, slow draining and stable, adheres to metal surfaces, 10 degree F pour point, superior in resisting burn back and reignition. Not effective on polar solvents or pure MTBE

10
Q

Alcohol resistent Fluoroprotein

A

Green Band. Superior for hydrocarbons and polar solvents, preferred foam for entry, excellent fuel shedding, burn back, water and wind disruption.
