Re-examination
To ensure max participation–need to do continual re-exams and adjust POC as needed
Children d/c from rehab center usually follow up 2 or more times per year
– Includes reexam of level and completeness of injury, bowel and bladder fxn, skin integrity, monitor spine for development of scoliosis, determine need for meds d/t spasticity or incontinence
Re-exam by PT
Not changes in any of the following areas: neuro, ROM, strength, sensation, spasticity
Teach children age appropriate self care- self cath, transfers, w/c mgmt
Adapt and modify w/c as needed to enhance independence
PT uses a consultative model
Make adjustments as appropriate at school as child grows (Accessibility and participation)
Transitions
18 y/o with SCI in US are eligible for state vocational counseling services
Facilitation of education and employment = improved life satisfaction in adults who acquire pediatric SCI
Also need discussion about sexuality and reproduction as become teenagers and adults
- -fertility in women with SCI is not impaired, but sexual response may be
- -men- sperm quality decreases over time
Pregnancy in pt with SCI– managed as high-risk pregnancy
