FOM (Backup Copy) Flashcards
- What are the crosswind limitations for CAT II/III approaches?
- Can you continue an approach if, after the crossing the FAF the RVR drops below what is required?
- Crosswind component can not exceed 15kt
- No. A go-around must be conducted after passing the FAF (or the published altitude of G/S intercepts if no FAF exists), if the RVR drops or flucuates below what is required for the approach.
FOM Rev. 40 8.11.6.6 4
Approaches in reported visibility _________ shall be flown by the Captain.
below 1/2 sm or RVR 2400ft (750m)
FOM Rev 40 8.11.7.1
In the US, CAT I ILS approaches are not authorized using ground visibility values below _________.
1/2 sm. RVR values are required.
FOM Rev 40 8.11.7.2
The following visual approahes are prohibited unless specified in the Jeppesen Route Manual 10-10 pages:
a)
b)
When conducting a night visual approach, flights crews shall not deviate from the published IFR route/altitudes until ___________.
- Night visual approaches at mountainous airpots; and
- Night contact approahces at mountainous airports.
- within 10 Nm of the airport.
FOM Rev 40 8.11.8.1 5.
Is Air Canada authorized to conduct circling approahces?
What can you do instead? What are some considerations?
What are the weather minimums?
No, Air Canada is not authorized to conduct circling approaches at published circling minima.
If such an approach is required, you can do so in accordance with the visual maneuvering procedures.
If there are no published straight-in minima, flight crews are authorized to conduct IFR approaches to the higher minima of:
- 1000’ HAA; or
- Where charted CAT D circling MDA is higher than 700’ HAA, the charted CAT D MDA + 300’ 1.
Visual Maneuvering weather requirments:
- no lower than 1500’ ceiling
- 3 sm visibility
FOM Rev 40 8.11.8.2
Are night VFR ops permitted?
No, they are prohibited.
FOM Rev 40 8.11.9
Can the IFR be cancelled on arrival?
Yes, but ony during the day, and only if you can continue VFR weather-wise, and continuing IFR would result in unnecessary delays.
FOM Rev 40 8.11.9
Can the approach be continued if the IAS or descent rate fluctuations exceed normal stable approach policy limits?
Yes, if the fluctuations are due to certain factors such as gusty conditions, slow A/THR response, etc., and are brief in duration, and can be corrected promptly with normal control/power inputs.
FOM Rev 40 8.11.10
For approaches that require lateral maneuvering below minimums, the aircraft shall be established on the extended runway centreline by _______.
300’ AAE
FOM Rev 40 8.11.10.1
Can the decision to go-around be reversed?
Who is responsible for terrain/obstacle clearance during a go-around?
What is the minimum altitude for turns after a go-around?
No, once the call has been made, the go-around shall be executed.
The flight crew. ATC procedures do not require ATC to provide terrain and obstacle clearance when they provide missed approach instructions.
A turn should not be started lower than 500’ AGL in any case after a go-around, and could be as high as an IFR sector altitude.
FOM Rev 40 8.12.1
What is the FOM stable approach criteria for each gate?
1000’ AAE - Configuration Gate:
- The aircraft should be fully configured for landing (gear/flaps/spoilers)
500’ AAE - Stable Gate
- The aircraft should meet the stable approach tolerances in accordace with the AOM
200’ AAE - Go-Around Gate
- No flight shall continue to landing past this gate unless the Configuration and Stable Gate requirements are fully met
- When the DA is below 300’ AAE and auto callouts are not available, the DA/Minimums call will also act as the Go-Around Gate
FOM Rev 40 8.11.4
Approach categories in Canada depend on speed flown during that particular approach. Outside of Canada, it’s based on stall speed.
What approach category does the B737 fall in outside of Canada?
B737-8 = Category D
FOM Rev 40 8.11.2
Is AC authorized for LAHSO operations?
No, not anymore.
FOM Rev 40 8.13.2
Below 1000’ AAE on approach the PF shall ________.
If the CA takes control during approach, can they give it back?
have their hands on the flight controls/thrust levers regardless of automation level in use.
If the PIC takes control below 1000’ AAE, they shall retain control and complete the landing or go-around.
FOM Rev 40 8.11.2
At what point can a go-around no longer be considered?
After reverse thrust has been selected on landing.
Once the go-around call has been made, the go-around shall be executed.
FOM Rev 40 8.12.1 / 8.13.4
What must be done when a taxi clearance is received?
Crew shall re-state the taxi instructions aloud.
FOM Rev 40 8.14.1
The after landing checks shall not be completed until:
- Clear of the runway; and
- Clear of all active runways if close parallele runway ops are in effect; and
- Taxi clearance received/read back/understood; and
- Switched from TWR to GND if applicable; and
- The safety of the flight will not be jeopardized; and
- On the CA’s command
FOM Rev 40 8.14.1
Once underway during taxi, the captain should
verbalize all planned turns, holding points, and when approach all runways.
FOM Rev 40 8.14.1
Can the passengers be disembarked with an engine running?
Yes, under exceptional circumstances when connected to a bridge with the brake set while waiting for ground power. Normally doors should not be opened until the beacon is turned off. Report to STOC and consider an ASR if doors are opened before the beacon is off. FOM 8.15.2
After shutdown, when comparing planned burn to actual burn:
crews should file an ASR if an unreasonable discrepancy exists. FOM 8.16.2
How can ON/IN times be adjusted if the ACARS didn’t record them properly and dispatch can’t make the change?
File a voyage report. FOM 8.16.63.
How long does AC keep flight records (OFP, ACARS transactions, etc.)?
Not less than 90 days. FOM 8.17.1
By how much should you clear the top of a thunderstorm?
- 5000’, or- 10 000’ if the upper winds are greater than 100 ktFOM 8.18.3.2
Reports of wind shear that causes losses of airspeed in excess of _________ should lead to delaying takeoff/approach.
15 kt FOM 8.18.4.2
