what is a food allergy
an allergy to a specific food causes the body’s immune system to react (can experience a life threatening reaction)
give 9 symptoms of food allergies
- coughing
- dry, itchy throat and tongue
- itchy skin or rash
- nausea and feeling bloated
-diarrhoea and/or vomitting - wheezing and shortness of breath
- swelling of lips and throat
- runny or blocked nose
- sore, red and itchy eyes
what are the symptoms of anaphylaxis
-rashes
-swelling of lips and throat
- difficulty breathing
-rapid fall in blood pressure
- loss of consciousness
what is anaphylaxis treated with
an injection of adrenaline (epi pen)
what common foods cause an allergy reaction and must be clearly indicated on the label, give 5
Any 5 from
- celery
- cereal that contain gluten
- crustaceans -shellfish
- eggs
- fish
- lupin
- milk
- molluscs- shellfish
- mustard
- peanuts
- tree nuts
give five pieces of dietary advice for how people can deal with food allergies
- exclude food causing the problem from all meals
- check labels on all food products, including on regular food purchases as ingredients may have changed
- check menus carefully and ask for advice if unsure when eating out
- identify replacements for foods that cannot be eaten, to ensure a balance of nutrients in diet
- carry EpiPen and make sure anyone you are in regular contact with is aware of condition and where to find EpiPen
