What is a balanced diet?
A diet that contains all 5 food groups, as well as water and fibres
What are the 5 food groups?
-Carbohydrates
-Lipids (Fats and Oils)
-Protein
-Vitamins
-Minerals
How do we get protein?
Meat, fish, eggs, beans
How do we get carbohydrates?
Potatoes, bread, pasta
How do we get lipids?
Butter, olive oil, avocado
How do we get vitamins?
A-Liver, spinach
C-Oranges, lemons
D-Eggs, oily fish
How do we get minerals?
Calcium-Milk, brocoli
Iron-Red meat, spinach, beans
How do we get fibre?
Cereal, rice, vegetables
How do we get water?
Drinks, foods (nearly everything)
Why do we need protein?
Growth and repair
Why do we need carbohydrates?
To release energy
Why do we need lipids?
To provide energy and be an energy store
Why do we need vitamins?
A-Good vision,healthy skin
D-To absorb calcium
C-Prevent scurvy
Why do we need minerals?
Calcium-Strong bones
Iron-To make haemoglobin
Why do we need fibre?
To help foo move through intestines properly
Why do we need water?
Chemical reactions, to replace water loss while breathing, sweating or urinating, as our bodies are 70% water
What happens if you don’t have enough protein?
Lack of growth
What happens if you don’t have enough carbohydrates?
Felling tired
What happens if you don’t have enough lipids?
Feeling tired, too thin
What happens if you don’t have enough vitamins?
A-Poor vision
D-Not enough calcium, weak bones
C-Scurvy
What happens if you don’t have enough minerals?
Calcium-Weak/deformed bones (rickets), damaged teeth
Iron-Amenia, meaning you can’t transport as much oxygen to your tissues
What happens if you don’t have enough fibre?
Constipation, diarrhea
What happens if you don’t have enough water
Dehydration
Who needs more energy?
-Active people
-Children and teenagers
-Pregnant women
