What are some macronutrients?
Lipids (Fats), Carbohydrates, and Proteins
What are some Micronutrients?
Vitamins, Minerals, and Water
Are Macronutrients required in large or small quantities?
They are required in large quantities
Are micronutrients required in large or small quantities?
They are required in small amounts however deficiency’s can cause health problems.
What is saturated fats?
A type of trans fat. Tend to stay solid in room temperature and causes fatty deposits within the blood vessels.
What is unsaturated fats?
Tend to be liquid at room temperature and less likely to clog your arteries.
What is carbohydrates function (purpose)?
Providing Energy
What are some food sources of Carbohydrates?
Bread, Grans, Dairy foods, sugary foods, Fruit and vegetables
What is Protein’s Function (purpose)?
Helps with structural support and hormones
What are some food sources of Protein?
Eggs, Lean Meat, dairy and sea food
What is Fats Function (purpose)
Protects organs and supports cell growth
What are some food sources of Fats?
Avocado
What happens when you have too much carbohydrates?
Diseases and weight gain
What happens when you don’t have enough Carbohydrates?
Low blood sugar levels
What happens when you have too much Protein?
Increase chance of infection
What happens when you don’t have enough protein?
Feeling fatigue, dehydration and nausea
What happens when you have too much fats?
Causes Obesity and high blood pressure
What happens when you don’t have enough fats?
You loose hair and become frequently sick
What is amino acids?
Are not made by the body and therefore essential to get through foods and drinks
What is non-essential amino acids?
Are produced by the body and therefore not essential to get through the diet.
Complete sources (Amino Acids) of protein foods?
Meat, Yogurt, Milk
Incomplete sources (Non-essential amino acids)
Rice, Fruit and Oats
Important people to monitor of their intake of protein?
Pregnant and breastfeeding, older people, recovering from injury, Malnutrition, Kidney disease.
Vitamin A sources of food?
Carrot, Rockamelon and Sweet Potato
