Food chain and Food webs Flashcards
(9 cards)
How do Autotrophs get their food?
They can make their own organic molecules from inorganic molecules. They use light energy from the Sun to produce food (sugar) from carbon dioxide and water.
What do Decomposers do?
They turn organic nutrients into inorganic ones. Examples include fungi and bacteria.
Define a Food Chain.
A linear and simple feeding relation. One organism has one type of food and is eaten by one type of organism. It shows how each living thing gets food.
What do the arrows in a Food Chain show?
The flow of energy from one organism to another.
How does energy flow in a Food Chain?
Each organism obtains energy from the one at the level below. For example, the sun provides energy to the tree, the tree provides energy to the giraffe, and the giraffe provides energy to the lion.
Define a Food Web.
A food web is more complex and is described as an “an interlocking pattern of food chains”.
How does a Food Web differ from a Food Chain?
It includes a larger variety of organisms. Each organism in a food web can feed on a variety of other organisms and, in turn, is fed upon by a variety of organisms.
What are the three types of consumers
herbivore, Carnivore, Omnivore, and Detritivores
How do Heterotrophs get their food?
They feed on ready-made organic material. They cannot synthesize their own organic molecules. They must eat plants or other animals to get the energy they need.
