Food chains & Webs Flashcards
(16 cards)
Food Chain
Series of events in which one organism eats another and obtains energy. (Each level is a trophic level)
Food Web
Shows how organisms interact with/in an ecosystem using many overlapping food chains.
Producer
Create their own food (glucose) using energy from the sun in the process of photosynthesis. (Producers are autotrophs)
Consumer
Gets food from other source. (Consumers are heterotrophs)
Herbivores
They only eat plants.
Carnivores
They only eat meat.
Scavengers
They are carnivores which eat the remains of dead organisms.
Omnivores
They eat both plants and meat.
Detrivores
They break down organic material/return nutrients to soil.
Organic Material
Any carbon-based material that was once living.
Primary Consumer
The first consumer to eat producers. (Can be herbivores or carnivores)
Secondary Consumer
Eats the primary consumer. (Can be carnivores or omnivores)
Tertiary Consumer
Eats the primary or secondary consumer, and is the “top of the food chain”. (Mostly carnivores but can be omnivores)
Cellular Respiration
Process when organisms use energy in food chain to power all their daily activities.
Trophic Levels
The several levels of the ecosystem
Quaternary consumer
Eats the tertiary consumer, and is also top of the food chain.
