16
Q

how does the emulsion test work?

A

it is mixed with alcohol which dissolves the lipid. the solution is then mixed with water

17
Q

when a lipid is present, what happens?

A

a white emulsion forms (Not precipitate) and lipids form droplets in the water

18
Q

how do you use iodine to test for starch?

A
  1. add iodine solution to sample and look for a colour change
19
Q

how do you use biuret to test for proteins?

A
  1. add biurets to the solution and look for a colour change
20
Q

how do you use ethanol to test for lipids?

A
  1. add ethanol to the solution and shake thoroughly
  2. add water and look for a colour change
21
Q

how do you use benedict’s solution to test for reducing sugars?

A
  1. add benedict’s to the solution
  2. heat for 2 minutes in a water bath at boiling temperatures.
