Each level of cranial cavity forms
Cranial fossa
Anterior cranial fossa cont
Frontal lobes of the brain
Floor of cranial fossa formed by
Ethmoid bone
Frontal bone
Lesser wings of the sphenoid bone
Parts of ethmoid bone
Cribriform plate- horizontal plate of bone covered with small holes
Crista galli- vertical plate of bone in the median plane to which the fall cerebri is attached
Floor of the anterior cranial fossa forms
The roof of each orbit
Middle cranial fossa
Cont the anterior aspects of the temporal lobes of the brain
Extends over the edge of the lesser wings of the sphenoid bone
Floor of middle cranial fossa
Greater wings of the sphenoid bone
Petrous part of the temporal bone
FORMS the room of each middle and inner EAR chamber
Openings of the middle cranial fossa
2 each
Lesser wing- OPTIC CANAL
Superior orbital fissure - between greater and lesser wings
Greater wing of the sphenoid
- foramen rotundum
Foramen ovale
Foramen spinosum
Foramen lacerum
Why is the greater wing kinda weak
The numerous foramina weaken the sphenoid bone, particularly the greater wing, and I thought to explain the occurrence of fractures in this region
Sella turcica
Deep notch that holds the pituitary gland, or hypophysis
Sphenoid sinus
Lies just below the sella turcica and is hidden from view in an intact skull. Surgeons often approach tumors of the pituitary gland by approaching the sinus via the nasal cavity.
Posterior cranial fossa
Cont cerebellum, pons, medulla oblongata
Floor formed by petrous part of the temporal bone and occipital
Openings:
2 internal acoustic meatus
Jugular foramen
Hypoglossal canal
1 foramen magnum .
What passes thru anterior cranial fossa
Sieve-like structure of the cribriform plate of the ethmoid bone allows the many OLFACTORY CN1
