back vowels where the tongue is pulled back in the mouth
a - tongue is low
o - tongue is upper middle
u - is high
/e/ /i/
front vowels - the tongue is to the front of the mouth
e - tongue-tip is behind lower teeth
i - tongue is high in the mouth, close to the upper gum line
/p/
same as english but halved duration (must have less breath released)
/h/ /k/ /m/ /n/ and /w/
are the same in english
/r/
a quick slap of the tongue against the roof of the mouth, at the same place as english /d/
/t/
tongue tip is either behind the upper teeth or very slightly between the teeth, not the roof of the mouth
/ng/
position mouth as if to say /n/ but then slide tongue slightly back in the mouth
Base of tongue, rises to meet back of the roof of mouth and slides forward
/wh/
sounds like /f/ sound
kirikiriroa or mihimihi
when there is a double up of the /i/ - first ‘i’ is flattened (sounds like ‘eh/uh’), the second ‘i’ retains its sharpness
