Force And Extension Flashcards
(10 cards)
What equipment is in this practical
Two clamps and two bosses to keep them in place, a clamp stand to put the clamps on, and a heavy weight to hold the clamp stand in place. Then you have your spring and a meter rule
Where must the top of the top of the spring be on the ruler
The top of the spring must be at the zero point on the meter rule
What is a very important thing that you have to check when you set up for the ruler
You have to make sure that the metre rule is vertical at the beginning of the practical, otherwise the reading will be inaccurate
What do you measure at the beginning of the practial
The end of the spring to see where it ends when it is at the unextended length at the beginning of the practical
How do you do the practical after setup
You put 1N and read new position at the end of the spring you then add newton plates one after another and measure all of them on the metre rule
How do you calculate the extension produced by adding each weight
You subtract the length of the unstretched string from each reading
What is this practical used for
To work out the weight of a mystery object eg stone( you do this by measuring the extension produced by the stone and where that lines up on the table to get the weight of stone
What do you have to do after the practical
Put it on a table with the extension as the y-axis and the weight as the x-axis with a line of best fit with your results
What might happen to the spring if you add to much weight
You might overstretch the spring this is also known as elastic deformation
What is the calculation to find out the force required to extend the spring
Force(F) = Spring constant(k) x extension(e)
