Force and Motion Flashcards
Speed
How fast something moves over a period of time (distance per time).
Velocity
Speed in a certain direction.
Friction
Resistance one surface encounters rubbing against another (does not change for give situation). Think brakes on a car or rough surfaces.
Thrust
The force which makes an object move.
Gravity
the force pulling two objects together (like the earth’s pull on an object, i.e. a falling person or the moon
Lift
Force that directly opposes the weight (gravity)
Drag
Force opposite of the objects motion increases as the object goes faster.
Buoyancy
A force that causes an object to float.
Inertia
What keeps an object at rest or moving in a straight line
Acceleration
any change in speed or direction
Weight
a measure of gravitational force that pulls on an object
Mass
a measure of an object’s inertia
Position
the location of an object
If you increase force on an object, you probably also increase ______..
acceleration.
Kinetic energy
Energy an object has because it is in motion
Potential energy
The energy an object has because of its position relative to others
Stored energy
Energy possessed by an object as a result of its position or condition rather than motion
