forces Flashcards
(16 cards)
What are scalar quantities?
speed, mass and energy.
What are vector quantities?
velocity, pressure and forces.
When a resultant force is 0, what happened to all the forces acting on the object?
They are balanced.
How can you calculate the moment of a force?
moment of force = force x distance
example of contact forces
friction, air resistance, tension
example of non contact forces
gravitational, electrostatic, magnetic
what is the centre of mass
the point at which the object appears to act
newtons first law
the velocity of an object will only change if a resultant force is acting on the object
newtons third law
if two objects interact, the forces they exert on eachother are equal and opposite
what is an elastic deformed object
does return to original shape
what is an inelastic deformed object
does not return to original shape
what does hookes law suggest
force applied to an elastic object is directly proportional to objects extension
what property of the spring does spring constant represent
stiffness
what is thinking distance
distance travelled between when driver realises they need to brake and putting their foot on the brakes
what is braking distance
distance car travelled between driver applying brakes and car stopping
what is newtons second law
the acceleration of an object is directly proportional to the resultant force acting on it and inversely proportional to its mass
