Forces Flashcards
(19 cards)
Normal force
The force that is exerted by the surface on an object which is in contact with it, and acts perpendicular to the surface.
Gravitational acceleration
Acceleration of the force exerted by the earth on an object on or near its surface towards the centre of the earth.
Formula to calculate weight
Fg/W= m(kg)xg (g=9.8 m°s ^-2)
The answer will be in Newton.
What is a force
A push or pull that causes an object to change its motion and direction/shape. It is a vector quantity that has both magnitude and direction.
Forces can either be
Contact forces where they act directly on an object or non contact forces which act from a distance
Examples of contact forces
Normal force(fn/N)
Applied force (f applied)
Tension force (Ft /T)
Friction force (Ff/Fk/Fs)
Non contact forces are
Gravitational force (fg)
Mangetic force
Electrostatic force
Weight
Gravitational force exerted by the earth on any object on or near its surface
Normal force
Perpendicular force exerted by the surface on an object in contact with it.
Frictional force.
Force that opposes the motion of an object and it acts parallel to the surface with which the object Is in contact it.
Tension force
The force that acts along a rope/string when it is stretched or pulled apart. Tension acts along a rope away from the object exerting the pull force.
Applied force
Push or pull that causes an object to accelerate. It’s a deliberate contact with the object exerting the force and the object receiving the force. It causes an object to change the motion to speed up or slow down or turn directions.
Types of applied forces
Compression force(push)
Tension force (pull)
Frictional force (opposes motion)
Contact forces cause a direct contact between
The force and the object on which it acts on.
The normal force always acts
90 degrees to the surface and it is equal to the force which the object exerts on the surface (weight)
.
Friction force depends on the
Roughness of the surfaces.
A smooth surface will be nearly frictionless like ice and the type of material
The force of friction can be increased by
Pressing the two surfaces together. Heavier objects will experience more friction.
Two kinds of frictional force
Kinetic friction (fk)
Force that slows down the motion of the moving object by acting in the opposite direction of the motion of the object.
Maximum static friction (Fs max)
Is the maximum force acted on a stationary object. A force that must be overcome to move the object
Maximum static friction
Opposed any applied force that’s trying to move the stationary object
Maximum static friction helps prevent an object from moving by creating a “grip” between the object and the surface it’s on.
Or
The force that opposes the tendency of a stationary object relative to the surface
