forces Flashcards
(15 cards)
What is Newton’s first law?
an object is at rest or at a constant velocity unless acted on by a resultant force
what is Newton’s second law?
Force equals mass times acceleration
What is Newton’s third law?
Every action has an equal and opposite reaction
how do you calculate stopping distance?
Stopping distance equals thinking distance plus breaking distance
what is thinking distance?
The distance of vehicle travels from when the driver realises they need to stop to break to when they actually apply the brakes
what is breaking distance?
Distance travelled from the moment the driver applies the brakes until the vehicle comes to a complete stop
What are the factors affecting thinking distance?
Alcohol, fatigue, drugs.
What are the factors affecting breaking distance?
Weather, terrain road, tyres, condition of vehicle and brakes
what is a resultant force?
The sum of all forces in all directions acting on an object
what is the conservation of momentum?
Total momentum before and after an event must be equal
what is a vector quantity?
Has a Magnitude and associated
What is a scaler quantity?
Only has a magnitude
State some examples of scaler quantities
Speed, distance
State some examples of vector quantities
Velocity, displacement
