Forces Flashcards
(40 cards)
What is a force?
A pull, push or twist
What do forces do?
They can change the shape, direction or speed of an object
What apparatus measures force?
Newton meter
What is the unit and to unit symbol for force
Newtons (N)
How do we represent different forces on a diagram?
Arrows.
What does the arrow size on a forced diagram represent?
The size of the force
What is the difference between weight and mass?
Mass is the amount of stuff something is made of and weight is dependent on the gravitational field strength
What are 2 objects interacting with each other called?
Am interaction pair
How do the forces in an interaction pair compare?
The same size but in the opposite directions
Give an example of an interaction pair
Pushing down on a table, throwing a ball, gravitational attraction between 2 objects with mass
What is deformation
Changing the shape of an object
What is compression
Decreasing the length of an object
What is extension
Increasing the length of an object
What is a reaction force
A contact force from a solid surface
What is hookes law
As the force on a spring increases, so does the extension
What is the point beyond which a spring will not return to its original length when the force is removed called?
The elastic limit
Describe the shape of the graph for hookes law.
Straight line growth that goes through (0,0)
What is the force that resists movement because of the contact between surfaces called?
Friction
What causes friction
Contacts between surfaces
Give a use of friction
Brakes on a car, walking
Give an example of where friction causes problems.
Slipping, (if there’s not enough) slowing objects down
How can friction be reduced
Lubrication
What is a fluid
A liquid or gas
What is the resistance force caused by the motion through a fluid called?
Drag force
