Forces Flashcards
(14 cards)
What is the difference between mass and weight?
Mass is the amount of matter; weight is gravity acting on mass.
What is gravity?
A force that pulls objects toward the Earth.
Name 3 types of energy.
Kinetic, thermal, chemical (others: light, sound, elastic).
What happens to wasted energy?
It often turns into heat or sound and is dissipated into the environment.
What causes tides on Earth?
The gravitational pull of the Moon (and to a smaller extent, the Sun).
What are the two main types of tides?
High tide and low tide.
How often do high and low tides occur?
Around every 12 hours (two of each per day).
How do sound waves travel through different materials?
Fastest in solids, slower in liquids, slowest in gases.( You don’t hear as much sound through a solid because it goes in different directions)
What is a seismograph used for?
Measuring the strength of earthquakes.
What is friction?
A force that slows things down when two surfaces rub together.
What is the formula for weight?
Weight = Mass × Gravity.
If an object is 5 kg, what is its weight on Earth?
50 N (because gravity = 10 N/kg).
What type of energy is stored in food?
Chemical energy.
What energy change happens when a car brakes?
Kinetic energy → heat (thermal energy).
