Forces Flashcards
(36 cards)
What is force measured in?
Newtons
What is a force?
A push, pull or twist action and they can be non-contact or contact.
What are some examples of a non contact force?
Gravity, electrostatic and magnetic.
What are some examples of a contact force?
Friction, push, pull or twist.
What can a force be?
A push, pull or twist action.
What do you use to show how much force is applied to an object in a drawing?
An arrow.
What does a force do?
Change the direction of something, change the speed or change the direction.
What is the scientific term for a force that moves forward?
Thrust.
What is the scientific term for a force in water?
Upthrust.
What is the scientific term for when two surfaces rub against each other?
Friction.
What is the scientific term for a pulling force?
Tension.
What is the scientific term for when one object squashes another?
Compression.
What is the scientific term for when an object passes through the air?
Air resistance.
What holds water on a coin?
Surface tension
Why don’t you fall through the floor?
The forces are equal between pushing up and down.
Why does a helicopter spin?
Because of the air resistance.
What is mass and how is it measured?
Mass is how much matter something has and it is measured in kilograms.
When is weight and how is it measured?
Weight is how much of a gravitational force something has on an object and it is measured in newtons.
What is air resistance?
Air resistance is the air molecules taking energy from the object to move out of its path.
What is friction?
It is the force between two objects when they touch.
When is friction a good thing?
When things need to stop, slow down or start moving.
When is friction a bad thing?
When there is too much friction, it can cause things to slow down to much but when there isn’t enough, things just slide everywhere.
How can friction be reduced?
By making the surface smoother.
What causes a boat to float?
Buoyancy.
