Forces Flashcards
(20 cards)
What is a force?
Strength or energy as an attribute of a physical action or movement. Force=Mass x Acceleration
What is work?
Work= Force x Distance
What is gravity?
Gravity is a force that keeps people on the ground. That pulls people towards the middle of the earth.
What is buoyancy?
Buoyancy is the upward push on an object that is floating on top of or submerged in a fluid. This acts on liquids and gases.
What is friction
The resistance that one surface or object encounters when moving over another.
What is lubricant?
A substance that is used to make things slide easier.
What is net zero of force?
Net force is the overall force acting on an object.
What incline plane?
An inclined plane is an even sloping surface. Eg. A ramp is an exhale of a inclined plane because it is on a slope.
What mechanical advantage?
It is about a machine in terms of the input force an output force.
What is wedge?
The wedge is a modification at the inclined plane which means wedges are either used to separate or hold devices (things).
What are the 3 simple machines that were studied that were used in ancient Egypt? Give an example of each of these please.
In ancient Egypt the people used a wheel and axel, pulley and ramp. A ramp was used to help pull the bricks up to the top of the pyramid. The pulley was used to get small bricks to the top of the pyramid. The wheel and axel was used to pull the load. The axel was the logs rolling on the ground.
What are some of the ways in which friction can be reduced?
When someone is trying to drive a car for example the person needs to move. But they don’t have any wheels and tyres. Therefore trying to move it would be hard and there would be a lot of friction the wheels and tyres reduce the amount of friction on the car there fore making it easier to move.
What are some ways in which friction can be increased?
One way the friction can be increased is when you take of the wheels on the car then there would be more friction.
What is surface tension?
Surface tension is the pulling of particles in a liquid towards each other.
What is a simple machine?
A simple machine is a machine that helps make work easier to perform by accomplishing one or more of the following.
- transferring a force from one place to another
- changing the direction of a force
- increasing the magnitude of a force
- increasing the distance or speed of a force
What is a 1st class lever?
A 1st class lever has the fulcrum places between the effort and the load. The movement of the load is in the opposite direction of the movement of the effort. This is the most common lever configuration.
What is a 2nd class lever?
A 2nd class lever has the load between the effort and the fulcrum. In this type of lever, the movement of the load is in the same direction as that of the effort.
What is a 3rd class lever?
A 3rd class lever has the effort between the load and the fulcrum. Bother the effort and load are the in same direction.
What is input force?
An input force is the force you apply.
What is output force?
Output force is the force which is applied to the task.
