Flashcards in Forces Deck (11):
1

What is a vector?

Vectors are quantities that are fully described by both magnitude and a direction

2

What is a scalar?

Scalars are quantities that are fully described by a magnitude alone.

3

List 6 different scalar quantities.

Density
Temperature
Pressure
Potential difference
Frequency
Power

4

List vector quantities.

Displacement
Velocity
Acceleration
Force
Momentum
Electric current

5

Is weight scalar or vector.

Vector - its direction is downwards

6

Defintion of resultant forces

overall force on a point or object

7

Why is a resultant force needed?

A resultant force is needed to change the velocity of an object.

8

Resultant force equation

Mass x Acceleration

9

Centre of mass definition (1)

the center of mass of a distribution of mass in space is the unique point where the weighted relative position of the distributed mass sums to zero

10

Centre of mass definition (2)

the point where if a force is applied it moves in the direction of the force without rotating

11

How to find the centre of mass?

The point about which the entire mass of the system is equally distributed is found by making a hole in the middle of the object and seeing if you can balance it.
