Forces Flashcards
(16 cards)
What is friction?
Friction is the force when two objects rub together or slide past each other
When you walk where is the friction happening?
When you walk, there is friction between your shoes and the ground and between your trousers if they rub against each other
What does friction produce?
Friction produces thermal energy
Name a type of friction
Air resistance / drag
How can you reduce air resistance?
You can reduce air resistance by streamlining an object so it is more aerodynamic
What is drag?
The force acting against an object ravelling through air or water
What is deformation?
When forces change the shape of objects
What is compression?
When forced squash an object
What is tension?
When forces stretch an object
What is elasticlimit?
When a spring will not go back to its original form
What is Hookes law?
When you double the force you double the extension
What is the calculation for a moment?
Force X perpendicular distance from pivot
What is the calculation for upthrust?
Force
Upthrust= ———

There is a force of 200N acting on the right of a car and a force of 350N acting on the left of the car, which way will the car travel and with how much force?
150N to the left
What is a pivot?
It is the centre point where which a mechanism rotates, turns or oscillates
What is the calculation for stress?
Force
Stress=————
