Forces Flashcards
1
Q
A Force
A
- A push, pull or twist
- Measured in Newtons (N)
- Causes changes in shape, direction or movement
2
Q
Contact force
A
a force that acts only between objects that are touching.
Examples:
Friction
3
Q
Non-contact force
A
A force that acts between objects even though the objects aren’t touching
Examples: magnetic, gravity, electrostatic
4
Q
Gravity
A
- A pull
- It affects everything on Earth
- Weight= mass x gravity
- holds planets in orbit
- The larger something is, the more gravitational pull
5
Q
Friction
A
- Friction is the force we feel when two surfaces rub together
- We can increase the friction between surfaces by increasing the roughness
- The harder things are rubbing together, the more friction there is
6
Q
Mass
A
Is a measure of the amount of material in an object of substance.
7
Q
Weight
A
Weight of an object or substance is a measure of the force of gravity pulling it towards the centre of a large object (planet, moon, star)
8
Q
Air resistance
A
Is a type of friction that occurs whenever an object moves through the air, and is caused by the frictional forces acting between the air and the object.
