Forces Flashcards
(30 cards)
What is a force?
A push, pull or twist on an object
If the forces on an object are all equal what will happen?
The object will stay stationary, or keep moving at a constant speed.
If the forces on an object differ what will happen?
The object will accelerate in whichever side the most force is put in.
What’s a newton meter?
An object that can measure how much force something is putting on it in newtons.
What can forces do to an object?
They can change shape, size, speed or location.
If an object is in motion, which direction does friction act on it?
Friction will always act against the way an object moves so whichever way the object is going friction will be acting away from that direction.
What is the force that makes you stay on Earth and makes things fall?
Gravity.
What force keeps you afloat in water?
Up thrust.
Are mass and weight the same?
No.
What is the difference between mass and weight?
Mass is how heavy an object is in kg or g. Whereas weight is the force an object puts on things.
How do you calculate speed?
Distance over time.
How do you calculate volume with water?
You put the object in water and see how much water it displaced.
What force did Isaac Newton discover?
Gravity.
What technique did Archimedes find of calculating volume?
The method of putting an object in water and seeing how much water it displaced.
Is weight a force?
Yes.
How do you calculate weight?
Mass times gravitational field strength.
What force tries to stop all objects from moving?
Friction.
What is lift?
A force pushing upwards on an object flying in the air.
What is 1kg in newtons?
10 newtons.
What is 100g in newtons?
1 newton.
Does volume change mass?
No.
Mass measures the effect gravity is having on an object. True or false?
False.
Do you need a constant force to increase speed?
Yes.
As the speed increases, what happens?
The air resistance gets higher?
