16
Q

Explain what happens (in terms of forces and acceleration) as an object is released from rest and then falls under gravity

A
  1. Object begins to accelerate as the force downwards due to gravity is greater than the force opposing motion due to air resistance.
  2. As the speed increases, so the air resistance increases.
  3. When the air resistance is equal to the force due to gravity then the forces are in equilibrium and the body will move at a constant velocity.
17
Q

Thinking distance is

A

the time between seeing the hazard and starting to brake

18
Q

Braking distance is

A

the time between pressing the brake pedal and stopping

19
Q

Stopping distance is

A

Thinking distance + Braking distance

20
Q

Thinking distance depends on

A
  1. Speed
  2. Alertness (e.g. tiredness, alcohol)
21
Q

Braking distance depends on

A
  1. Speed
  2. Mass of vehicle
  3. Road conditions
  4. Tyres
22
Q

Deformations is

A

when a force produces a change in size or shape of a body

23
Q

Elastic deformation is

A

when the body returns to its original size and shape after deformation

24
Q

Hooke’s Law

A

Force = Spring constant x Extension (F = kx)

25
On a Force - Extension graph of a spring
1. The initial straight part is the Elastic Region 2. The end of the initial straight part is the limit of proportionality 3. The curved part is the plastic region 4. The end of the curved part is when the body/spring fractures
26
Moment equals
Force x Perpendicular distance from the pivot
27
Moment is a measure of
turning effect
28
Moment is measured in
Nm
29
If the sum of the clockwise moments equals the sum of the anticlockwise moments, then the body is
In equilibrium
30
Momentum equals
Mass x Velocity
31
Momentum is measured in
kgm/s
32
Force equals
change in momentum/time
33
To increase safety in a car
force is reduced by increasing time for a given momentum change - e.g. car seat belt or air bag
34
The six contact forces are
1. Friction 2. Air-resistance 3. Tension 4. Spring force 5. Applied force 6. Normal force FAT SAN
35
The three action at a distance forces are
1. Gravitational 2. Electrical 3. Magnetic
36
In a collision, momentum is always
conserved
