Forces and Motion Flashcards
(20 cards)
What is a scalar quantity?
A scalar quantity only has magnitude
What is a vector quantity?
A vector quantity has magnitude and direction
Formula for average speed
S = D/T
a = ?
a = (v-u)/t
v² = ?
v² = u² + 2as
How do you find the velocity from a displacement/time graph
Gradient
How do you find the displacement from a velocity/time graph
Area under graph
How do you find the acceleration from a velocity/time graph
Gradient
Definition of mass
The amount of matter in an object
Definition of weight
The pull of a planet on a mass
What is g (Earth’s gravitational field strength)
10 Nkg⁻¹
What is the acceleration due to weight on Earth
10 ms⁻²
What is friction?
A force that opposes the motion of an object
What is normal contact force?
A force that occurs as a result of 2 objects contacting
What is tension?
A tensile force generated when 2 forces pull against each other
What is newton’s 1st law of motion?
If the forces acting on an object are balanced, the object will continue to move at a constant velocity
What is newton’s 2nd law of motion?
If an unbalanced force acts on an object, the object will accelerate
F = ma
What is terminal velocity?
When the magnitude of air resistance is the same as that of weight so the object neither accelerates or deccelerates
How does friction change as speed increases?
It increases
What affects air resistance?
Surface area
Velocity
