Forces And Motion Flashcards
(22 cards)
What is the difference between speed and velocity?
Velocity specifies direction as well as speed whereas speed does not
What is the equation for speed?
Speed = Distance / Time
Average speed = Distance moved / Time taken
What does ‘s’ often represent in physics?
Distance
What are speed and velocity measured in?
m/s
What is acceleration measured in?
m/s(squared)
What are the equations for acceleration?
Acceleration = change in velocity / time
v(squared) = u(squared) + 2as
What does a flat line represent on a distance-time graph?
Not moving / stopped
What does an increasing gradient mean on distance-time graph?
Travelling at a constant speed
What do curves represent on distance-time graphs?
Acceleration and deceleration
How to calculate the average speed on a distance-time graph?
Read the graph to find the total distance and the total time, then divide the distance by the time
What does the gradient represent on a velocity-time graph?
Acceleration
What does a flat line mean on a velocity-time graph
Constant speed
How to calculate the distance travelled in a velocity-time graph?
Calculate the area under the graph
Which is a constant value, mass or weight?
Mass
What is mass measured in?
Kg
What is weight measured in?
Newtons (N)
What is the formula relating weight, mass and gravity?
Weight = Mass x Gravitational field strength
W = m x g
What is the rough gravitational field strength on Earth?
10m/s(squared)
List 3 different types of force
- Gravity /weight
- Electrostatic
- Thrust
- Friction / air resistance
- Tension
What is the first law of motion?
So long as the forces on an object are all balanced, the object will remain at the same velocity
What is the second law of motion?
Resultant Force = Mass x Acceleration
F = ma
What is the third law of motion?
Every action has an equal and opposite reaction
