Forces and Movemnt - Half Term 1 Flashcards
(17 cards)
What is speed?
Speed is how far something can travel in a matter of time
What are some units used for speed?
kilometres per hour (km/h)
miles per hour (mph)
metres per second (m/s)
What is the equation used for calculating (average) speed?
speed = distance/time
How do you convert from m/s to km/h?
x3.6 (or divide by 3.6 for the opposite)
What are the units for acceleration?
m/s^2
What does an object with balanced forces acting upon it do?
It continues at a constant speed
What does an object with unbalanced forces acting upon it do?
It accelerates or deccelerates
What is a lever?
A long bar that turns around a pivot or fulcrum, used to move heavy objects
How does a lever work?
You push on one side and apply effort to try and move the other object which is called the load
What is the turning effect of a force called?
The moment
What are moments measured in?
Newton metres (Nm)
What is the formula regarding moments?
Moment of the force (Nm) = force (N) x perpendicular distance from the pivot (m)
What is a force multiplier?
Something that increases the effect (or “potency”) of a force
What is a distance multiplier?
A system or machine, for example a bicycle, that uses effort over a short distance to move a load through a longer distance.
What is a machine?
Anything that can help us to work with forces
