Forces In Stuctures Flashcards
(7 cards)
What is a force
A force is either a push or pull that can cause an object to move, change direction or change shape (deform)
External forces
An external force acts on an object from outside the object forces caused by a push or pull on a structure such as the weight of the people in the structure or even natural hazards or disasters.
Internal forces
There are four internal forces
Compression tension torsion and bending forces on the inside of a structure and are caused by external forces
Tension
Tension occurs when a force is applied to an object that stretches it apart
Compression
Compression occurs when to opposite forces act to push an object together
Bending
Bending is the change of deformation in a material caused by stress or force
Torsion
Torsion occurs when to forces twist an object if opposite directions
