Forces - Singular Words Flashcards
(26 cards)
Force
A Push or A Pull
Contact Force
A force that has to involve contact to occur.
Non-Contact Force
A force that does not need contact to occur.
Force Diagram
A diagram using arrows to show forces.
Interaction Pairs
Interaction pairs are the pairs of forces that act upon you. Eg: Reaction Force and Gravity.
Newtons
The unit used to measure forces.
Newton Metre
The instrument used to measure newtons.
Deform
An affect all contact forces have.
Compress
Making an object smaller.
Reaction/Normal Force
The force that works against gravity to keep you from falling to the centre of the Earth.
Extension
How much an object grows in length when you add newtons.
Elastic Limit
A limit that acts on springs and other similar objects. When it is passed, the spring won’t return to it’s normal shape.
Hooke’s Law
Hooke’s Law states that when you double the amount of force on an object, the extension will double.
Balanced Force
When two forces are balanced, they are in equilibrium, this means nothing will move.
Weight
Another name for gravity
Friction
The force between any two moving objects that are touching. Eg: The cars wheels and the road.
Air Resistance/Drag
A contact force that acts of objects moving through the air.
Gravity
The force that keeps you on the ground.
Water Resistance
A contact force that acts on any object moving through water.
Streamlined
Streamlining is a way to reduce air and water resistance.
3 Affects of Forces
Forces Can change
3 Affects of Forces
A force can change Speed
Shape
Position
Tension
Tension is what happens when a bungee cord reaches its limit and brings you back up.
Thrust
Thrust is how cars move along the road.
