The need for new and raw materials.

Belief that one race is superior to another. Many Europeans had a duty to spread their religion and culture to people who were less civilized.
Competition
European countries took over areas and closed their markets to other countries.
What did people feel about the American economy?
Many felt that the American economy would collapse unless the U.S. gained foreign markets.

Rich in soil, warm climate, plentiful rain, allows farmers to grow crops year round.

American missionaries wanted to convert Hawaiins to Christianity.

Americans set up sugar plantations and as the sugar industry grew so did the power of American planters.
