what is offender profiling and what is the aim of it
its an investigation tool employed by the police when solving crimes.
Aim is to narrow down the list of likely suspects
who originated the top down approach
originated in the united states, known as the American approach. it was carried out by the FBI
what did the FBI behavioral science unit do
they gathered data through in-depth interviews with 36 sexually motivated murderers including ted Bundy
what did the FBI behavioral science unit conclude
concluded that data could be categorized into organized and disorganized, which all had characteristics
what do offender profilers do within the top down approach
they use it to collect data about a murderer then decides on the category that best fits them
what do profilers do in the top down approach
they start with a pre-establish typology and work down to lower levels to assign offenders one or two categories

they have more of an average IQ

they tend to live with someone, i.e. families
