When isnt a felling licence required?
-If you are felling less than 5 cubic metres per calendar quarter
-have a diameter of 8cm or less, or 10cm for thinning, or 15cm for coppice
- Trees in an orchard, garden, churchyard
- Trees that present immediate danger or actionable nuisance (e.g. encroachment)
- If you have received an SPHN
-If outlined in planning consent for development
-Statutory undertakings
What is the UKFS?
The UK Forestry Standard 5th Edition (published 2023, effective October 2024) is the technical standard for sustainable forest management across the UK, and applies to all woodland, regardless of who owns or manages it.
Common tree diseases in Sussex
- ash dieback
- Ips typographus
- Phytophthora Ramorum - oak, larch, sweet chestnut - black bleeding on trunk, withering and blackening of leaves
What funding is available on EWCO and what are the eligibility requirements?
-£10,200 per hectare, plus up to an additional £12,700 in stackable payments when delivering wider benefits to society, nature recovery and the environment.
-£400 per ha maintenance grant per annnum
-parcels larger than 1 ha
-15 years of annual maintenance payments, first 5 years automatic, apply again in years 6 and 11.
- Apply Woodland Creation Planning Grant prior to EWCO if your proposal will be 5 hectares or more in size
-Woodland carbon code - carbon units
-apply by 30 june to secure funding for next planting season
-to be incorporated into ELMS
WD2 - Woodland Improvement
-Now known as CWD2
-£127 / ha (or minimum £500)
-Management duration is now 10 years, minimum size reduced to 0.5 ha
- Must have FC approved WMP and felling licence
- Supplemental actions for things such as pest management, heritage, access etc
How long is a coppice rotation for fencing posts (chestnut)?
30 years
What is a night shooting Licence and how to apply?
-AR16 form on government website, submit with supporting evidence.
-Licence to shoot at night for health and safety reasons, to prevent the deterioration of natural heritage or to stop serious damage to property
-Natural England will only approve if serious risk and no alternative
PA3 - capital grant - WMP funding
-0.5 hectares (ha) to 50ha: flat rate of £1,500
-51ha to 100ha: flat rate of £1,500 for the first 50ha, plus £30 for each additional hectare up to and including 100ha
-more than 100ha: flat rate of £3,000, plus £15 for each additional hectare over 100ha
-must be over 0.5 ha
WS1 (Deer) and WS3 (Squirrel)
-WS1 = £105 / ha
-WS3 = £60 / ha
-Must have approved deer management plan / squirrel control plan
-Must submit cull data annually
SPHN - Ips
Use THP to restock. Over 8cm, must be chipped or burnt onsite. If chip is leaving site, must go to authorised processor. Less than 8cm, can be left onsite or chipped.
SPHN timeframes
Prohibition on planting spruce in demarcated area since October 2024.
Landowners must provide notice of their intention to fell relevant material at least 14 days in advance of any felling in the demarcated areas.
Infected trees, or those within 300m of infected trees, must be felled prior to the end of Feb or within 6 weeks of the date of the SPHN, whichever is sooner.
Those within 300 - 1000m must be felled by the end of the following February.
Timber values
Firewood - £35 / tonne
Chip - £3 - £5 per tonne
Oak Log - £90 per tonne
Woodland Carbon Code
The Woodland Carbon Code (WCC) sets out
requirements for voluntary carbon sequestration
projects that incorporate core principles of good carbon
management as part of sustainable forest management.
Woodland carbon units from verified WCC projects can help companies compensate for its unavoidable emissions.
Rhodi Control grant - SB6
CSHT capital grant. Payment rate depends on slop of site and height of rhodi. Ranges between £3.5k p/ha to £5.5k per ha. Can be used as part of woodland tree health grant or WD2. Mulching costs around £1,000 per day.
Tree Health Pilot - Ash Dieback
Covers 60% of costs for traffic management, tree surveys etc. Maintenance payments = £400 /ha for 3 years.
Restocking and capital item funding = Up to £6,000 per hectare for ancient woodland sites. Up to £4,720 per hectare for other sites
Fallow deer open season
Bucks: August 1st to April 30th.
Does: November 1st to March 31st.
